I responded to Dan’s question in the response section, but I wanted to deal with part of his question here in the main section of the website. He asked this–
I am studying to find the answer to the question, “How can one know that his hermeneutics are the correct hermeneutics.”
I am assuming you are not referring to “my” hermeneutics, but you are meaning to ask this:
How do I know that their interpretation is the correct one?
The word “hermeneutics” simply refers to the study of principles for interpreting the Bible. (Introduction to Hermeneutics, Gibbs, McGhee, Teague). That’s why I rephrased your question; I believe you are questioning an individual’s interpretation of a particular passage. And that’s an excellent question, which is why studying hermeneutics is, in my opinion, vital for every believer who takes his faith seriously. This can be done in a formal way, like what we do at The Learning Center, or informally, by purchasing good, conservative books on the topic, like the ones I listed for you. Also, never ever forget that if you are born again, the Holy Spirit resides in you and we have the promise that He will lead us into all truth. All believers should, therefore, learn to listen to the voice of the Spirit, we should learn to discern truth from error. The Holy Spirit will help us to do just that. If you recall the story of Jesus, after His resurrection, He was walking along with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, although they didn’t recognize Him immediately, when He quoted and expounded on the Scriptures, their “hearts burned within them.” I believe that as the Word is presented to us in a proper and honorable fashion, our hearts, too, will “burn” within us as the Holy Spirit ministers to our spirits.
I can’t teach the course here, that’s not the purpose of this blog. From time to time I put up print versions of my lectures, mostly for the benefit of our students, but also for members of the congregation who hear me every Sunday referencing the class. The best thing for you to do, Dan, and indeed any of you who are reading this, is to make an investment in the books I listed in the response section. I am a firm believer in study and learning. The Lord will not do for us what we can and should be doing for ourselves. We are admonished to study and learn throughout Scripture: that is our responsibility. So, let’s do it, with the help of the Lord.
Thanks for your question, Dan. May the Lord bless you.
